Derya Fırat

Derya Fırat graduated from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Department of Sociology in 1995. She completed her Master's degree in Political Science at Université de Paris IX Dauphine in 1998-1999 and her Master's degree in Sociology at Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS)-Paris in 1999. In 2005, she defended her PhD thesis in Sociology at EHESS. Since 2006, Derya Fırat has been a faculty member at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Department of Sociology, where she focuses on collective memory, cultural production spaces, youth sociology, sociology of migration, historical events and generational relations, and lifestyles.


She is a founding member of the "Bellek ve Kültür Sosyolojisi Çalışmaları Derneği" (Memory and Sociology of Culture Studies Association) and the MSGSU Interdisciplinary Cultural Studies Research and Application Center. Throughout her career, she has directed various field studies, including "Fransa’da Türkiyeli Göçmenler" (Turkish Immigrants in France), "Büyük Kentlerde Yaşayan Orta Sınıf Kökenli Eğitimli Gençlik ve Geliştirdikleri Yeni Yaşam Biçimleri" (Educated Youth of Middle Class Origin Living in Large Cities and the New Ways of Life They Develop), and "Bir Kolektif Bellek Çalışması: 12 Eylül" (A Collective Memory Study: September 12). In addition, Derya Fırat, together with Barış Şannan, has contributed to the preparation of a report on hate speech against Armenians as part of the Hrant Dink Foundation’s Media Watch on Hate Speech.
