Çelik, Kezban & Lüküslü, Demet | 2012 | Makale | İngilizce | Spotlighting a Silent Category of Young Females: The Life Experiences of “House Girls” in Turkey | Youth & Society | 10.1177/0044118X10391636 | 44(1) | 28-48 | Turkey has the highest proportion of young people not in employment, education, or training (NEET) among OECD countries, standing at 26 percent of all those aged 15–29 years. Notably, however, a young woman in Turkey is three times more likely to be out of education and employment than a young man. Based on statistical data on the NEET category and qualitative research drawing on experiences of young NEET women in six large cities in Turkey, this article discusses the gendered characteristics of this category. This article aims to reconcile competing perspectives in youth studies, namely transition and cultural perspectives, and argues for the importance of introducing cultural elements and gender perspective in the NEET literature, for which the Turkish case offers an important case study.

Adopting a comparative perspective, it also aims to address how Turkish youth research relates to broader trends. Finally, it takes a closer look at the current state of youth research in Turkey.

Ataman, Aysenur; Cok, Figen; Sener, Tulin | 2012 | Makale | İngilizce | Understanding civic engagement among young Roma and young Turkish people in Turkey | Human Affairs - Postdisciplinary humanities & social sciences quarterly | 10.2478/s13374-012-0034-z | 22(3) | 419-433 | Although a number of aspects of earlier experiences correlate with later civic engagement (Sherrod 2007), the role of different factors in driving the level of young people's engagement is not clearly understood. This qualitative study set out to understand those factors in Turkey. Eight focus groups were conducted with 55 young Roma and Turkish people, with different groups being conducted according to participants' ethnicity, gender and age (16-18 year olds vs. 20-26 year olds). Analysis revealed specific themes in terms of the political and civic engagement of different sub-groups. However, almost all participants expressed that they did not have enough information about their rights and obligations as citizens. They also identified the different barriers which they perceived as impeding their political involvement and participation.
Boratav, Hale Bolak; Cavdar, Alev | 2012 | Makale | İngilizce | Sexual Stereotypes and Practices of University Students in Turkey | Archives of Sexual Behavior | 10.1007/s10508-011-9811-8 | 41(1) | 271-281 | This article is based on a study of young people and sexuality in Turkey. The focus of this study included messages about sexuality, sexual beliefs, sexual experiences with a view to consent and resistance, religiosity, and certain interrelations therein. A total of 471 students (273 women, M age = 20.5 years, and 198 men, M age = 21 years) from four different universities in Turkey participated in a survey with measures of restrictive and permissive messages about sexuality received from various sources, beliefs about sexual roles of men and women in relationships, and questions about a range of sexual experiences, including coital and non-coital. The incidence and characteristics of ideal sexual partnership and incidence and dynamics of experiences involving token resistance and consent to unwanted sex were specifically investigated. The results provided a snapshot of the sexual lives of students in this country at the crossroads of secularism and traditional Muslim mores. Both commonalities and differences were found across gender. Both men and women received more restrictive than permissive messages. The most important message source was same-sex friends for men and parents for women. Men had more dating and sexual partners than women. The correlations of religiosity and messages with sexual experiences and attitudes were mostly in the expected direction. Women were more likely to have a token resistance incidence and both genders were equally unlikely to consent to unwanted sex. The results were discussed in relation to the cultural context and the relevant literature, and recommendations are offered for future research.
